Our Story
The Liyuan Theatre is nestled in the heart of Beijing's historic Xicheng District, just south of Tian'anmen Square. This vibrant area is steeped in the rich cultural heritage of old imperial Beijing and is renowned as the birthplace of Peking Opera, one of China's most cherished traditional art forms, famous for its elaborate costumes, stylized movements, and captivating vocal performances.
Housed within the historic Qianmen Jianguo Hotel—originally constructed in 1956 following the founding of the People's Republic of China and beautifully renovated in 2002—the theatre seamlessly blends modern comfort with traditional charm. Since its opening in 1999, it has welcomed countless visitors from around the world to experience classic Peking Opera performances in a grand opera hall that seats up to 1,000 guests.
The hall's design and décor are a feast for the eyes: intricate Chinese couplets and calligraphy adorn the walls, vividly painted opera masks are prominently displayed, and elegant Chinese folding screens create an immersive, timeless atmosphere. Guests can witness the artistry of highly trained performers, hear the distinctive melodies of traditional Chinese instruments, and feel the rich storytelling that has been passed down through generations.
In addition to the performances, visitors have the unique opportunity to explore the performers' makeup rooms, where the meticulous process of applying traditional Peking Opera makeup is demonstrated. The theatre also offers a variety of Peking Opera-themed souvenirs, from intricate miniature masks to traditional fans, allowing guests to take a piece of Beijing culture home. With English commentary provided throughout the performance, Liyuan Theatre ensures that every visitor—whether a first-time tourist or a seasoned opera lover—can fully appreciate the depth, beauty, and drama of this timeless art form.
